How to Create an NFT in 2026: Step-by-Step Guide

How Do You Create an NFT?

To create an NFT, you prepare a digital file, connect a crypto wallet, choose a blockchain, and "mint" the file on a marketplace or through your own smart contract. Minting writes a token that points to your file onto the blockchain, which proves who owns that token. This guide covers both the no-code route and the custom smart contract route.

Creating an NFT is easy for one-off art. Building a full collection, a marketplace or an in-game item system needs a custom contract and backend, which is where a development team helps.

Step-by-Step: Create an NFT

  1. Prepare your file. Image, video, audio, 3D model or document. Keep a high-quality original.
  2. Set up a wallet. Use a self-custody wallet and store the recovery phrase offline. Never share it.
  3. Choose a blockchain. Ethereum has the largest market; Polygon, Base, BNB Chain and Solana usually have lower fees.
  4. Fund the wallet. Buy the network's coin for transaction (gas) fees.
  5. Pick how to mint. Use a marketplace's create tool for a quick single NFT, or deploy your own contract for a collection.
  6. Upload and add details. Name, description, properties and royalty percentage where the marketplace supports it.
  7. Mint and list. Confirm the transaction, then set a fixed price or an auction.
  8. Verify. Check the token on a block explorer and confirm the metadata and image load.

Common standardERC-721 or ERC-1155 (managed for you)ERC-721, ERC-1155 or Solana programs

What the Standards Mean

  • ERC-721: each token is unique, used for one-of-a-kind items
  • ERC-1155: one contract can hold many token types, including copies, which suits games
  • Metadata: the name, description and image link stored with the token, often on IPFS or similar storage

Where to Store the File

The blockchain usually stores a link, not the file. If the link points to a normal web server and that server goes offline, the NFT can end up pointing to nothing. Decentralized storage such as IPFS, with the file pinned by a reliable service, is the safer choice for serious projects.

Common Mistakes

  • Sharing the wallet recovery phrase or signing unknown transactions
  • Using copyrighted material you do not own
  • Storing metadata on a server you may stop paying for
  • Skipping a contract audit before a paid public mint
  • Ignoring local tax and consumer rules on selling digital assets

When You Need Custom Development

You need a developer when you want a large collection with allowlists and reveals, in-game items players can trade, royalties enforced by your own rules, or a branded marketplace. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to create an NFT?

Creating one on a marketplace can cost only the network fee and any listing fee, which varies by chain and time. A custom contract and collection project costs more because of development and audit work.

Can I create an NFT for free?

Some platforms let you create a listing without paying until a sale happens, but a transfer or sale still involves network fees. Always read the fee terms.

Which blockchain is best for creating NFTs?

Ethereum has the deepest market, while Polygon, Base, BNB Chain and Solana offer lower fees. Pick the chain where your buyers already are.

Do I need to code to make an NFT?

No for a single NFT on a marketplace. Yes, or a developer, for custom collections, game items or your own marketplace.

Do I own the copyright when I sell an NFT?

Not automatically. An NFT proves ownership of the token. Whether the buyer also receives rights to the artwork depends on the license you state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions about blockchain, trading infrastructure, and digital asset platforms.

Which engine is better: Unity or Unreal Engine 5?

+

It depends on your project goals. UE5 is superior for high-fidelity, cinematic realism, while Unity offers excellent cross-platform flexibility for mobile and lightweight web experiences.

How scalable are crypto payment systems?

+

Layer-2 networks, batching, and gas optimization allow Web3 payment infrastructure to support millions of users and high-frequency transactions.

How secure are crypto exchange platforms?

+

Security is achieved through cold-wallet custody, multi-signature authorization, encryption, DDoS protection, and continuous monitoring. BitgoLabs follows institutional security best practices across all exchange deployments.

How long does it take to build a crypto exchange?

+

White-label deployments may take weeks, while fully custom institutional exchanges with derivatives, compliance, and liquidity integrations can require several months depending on complexity.

What is the difference between Ethereum, BNB, Solana and Tron MLM software?

+

The business logic is the same; the network changes cost and speed. Ethereum and Layer-2 networks offer the strongest security record, BNB Chain and Tron offer low fees for high member counts, and Solana offers fast, cheap transactions. BitGoLabs builds smart contract MLM software on each of them and can recommend one after reviewing your plan.
